HD Video In vs HDMI: How CB7 Expands OEM CarPlay Into a Smarter System

ATOTOHaru |

TL;DR: Many OEM CarPlay vehicles offer great factory screens but limited expansion. ATOTO’s new CB7 series goes far beyond a typical OEM CarPlay Android AI BOX—it’s a flexible wireless CarPlay adapter with Android OS that also supports HDMI Video Input / HDMI Video Out and a dedicated HD Video In port for clean camera feeds. This allows you to easily add AI Vision camera to OEM CarPlay head unit or add wireless front view camera to OEM CarPlay head unit without replacing the original system. In practice, it’s one of the simplest ways to turn your OEM CarPlay car stereo into an intelligent in-car infotainment system. CB7S is already shipping, The CB7P (which adds remote real-time viewing functionality) is planned to be released through crowdfunding by the end of 2025. This article breaks down how HD Video In differs from HDMI, how the AI Vision features work, and practical camera/entertainment setups.

Availability status: CB7S (CB7SAX / CB7SBX) is now shipping. CB7P (CB7PQ / CB7PO) is in development with a planned late-December 2025 crowdfunding debut, after the campaign, it will launch on major e-commerce platforms.
If your vehicle already supports OEM CarPlay and has a large display, ATOTO’s CB7SAX / CB7SBX and CB7P (CB7PQ / CB7PO) add something rare in this category: a dedicated HD Video In port alongside HDMI In and HDMI Out. In short, you can connect entertainment devices through HDMI and simultaneously use the HD Video In port for a camera feed—viewing, recording, and on CB7P even remote-previewing that feed via phone.
Users often search for: OEM CarPlay Android AI BOX, wireless CarPlay adapter with Android OS, add AI Vision camera to OEM CarPlay head unit, add wireless front view camera to OEM CarPlay head unit, turn your OEM CarPlay car stereo into intelligent in-car infotainment system. CB7 supports all of these scenarios while keeping the factory interface intact.

First, what is HD Video In (and how is it different from HDMI In)?

HD Video In = an AHD (Analog High Definition) camera input designed for low-latency driving feeds (front view or dash cam). The box handles encoding and recording internally.
HDMI In = a digital input for entertainment devices such as Fire TV, Chromecast with Google TV, Apple TV, Roku, laptops, or game consoles.
Supported models: CB7SAX (4GB+64GB), CB7SBX (8GB+128GB), CB7PQ (4GB+64GB), CB7PO (8GB+128GB) — all include HDMI Out, HDMI In, and HD Video In.
Accessories like cameras, WR2A wireless kits, and OBD dongles are sold separately.

Two ways to use the HD Video In port

A) Wireless front/rear view using the upcoming WR2A kit (720p wireless feed)

What it is: A battery-powered camera transmitter at the plate (rear or front plate for front-view) paired with a compact receiver that outputs 720p to the HD Video In port.
Why it matters: Most OEM CarPlay vehicles include a rear camera but lack a front-view perspective. WR2A enables a wireless front camera for tight parking, steep trail crests, and tricky urban turns.
Status: WR2A is under development with an ETA of mid-2026.

B) A dedicated FHD dash cam via the ATOTO AC-HD12F (1080p @ 25 fps)

What it is: A 1080p AHD camera mounted near the interior mirror, pointing forward or into the cabin.
What makes it special: CB7 handles encoding, loop recording, and playback directly on the car’s screen—no SD card juggling.
DVR features: Loop recording with clip protection (manual “lock”).
AI Vision rollout: The new AI Vision / Eyes of AI Agents feature begins November 15, rolling out to CB7 models through November 30.

AI Vision for OEM CarPlay (CB7): from a camera feed to a helpful co-pilot

(This is an informational companion, not an ADAS or real-time safety system.)
Using periodic snapshots (every tens of seconds to ~2 minutes), CB7 analyzes images in the cloud and combines them with GPS and optional Bluetooth OBD data (speed, fuel, DTC codes). Examples include:
1. Overspeed reminders based on a user-defined limit.
2. Low-fuel suggestions with nearby station recommendations.
3. Smarter fault-code guidance using vehicle-aware tips.
4. POI concierge offering highlights around your location.
5. Context hints like “wet surface,” “muddy terrain,” “baby asleep,” or “item left on seat.”

Again, this is not a replacement for ADAS—you remain fully responsible for driving decisions.

Remote Live View (CB7P only, via the SSHub mobile app)

CB7P (CB7PQ / CB7PO) lets you request a remote first-person preview from the connected HD camera—road or cabin—via your smartphone. Useful for check-ins when away from the vehicle. (Not available on CB7S.)

Real-world recipes

● Add wireless front view to your OEM CarPlay head unit

Install WR2A on the front plate → WR2A RX → HD Video In on CB7 → live front camera on the factory CarPlay display.

● Turn your OEM CarPlay car stereo into an intelligent in-car infotainment system

Combine AC-HD12F + CB7’s DVR app → record 1080p/25 → watch recordings on the factory screen → use AI Vision for contextual insights.

●Front view + entertainment for passengers

keep HD Video In for the driving camera, and switch to HDMI In when parked to connect Fire TV / Chromecast / Apple TV 4K / Roku / DVD/Blu-ray players. Output to a rear display through HDMI Out.

HDMI vs. HD Video In — choosing modes

To optimize stability, the CB7 uses a simple toggle:
HDMI Mode → enables HDMI In/Out, disables DVR/HD Video In
DVR Mode → enables HD Video In + DVR (1080p/25), disables HDMI In/Out
Switch based on your scenario: driving evidence vs entertainment.

Why it’s different from other “wireless CarPlay Android AI box” devices

● It’s more than a wireless CarPlay adapter with Android OS—it also integrates HDMI Video Input / HDMI Out and a dedicated HD Video In port.
● This architecture lets you truly add AI Vision camera to OEM CarPlay headunit or add wireless front view camera with driving-oriented clarity.
HDMI handles entertainment; HD Video In handles driving cameras with DVR and AI analysis.
● It’s a practical path to turn your OEM CarPlay car stereo into intelligent in-car infotainment system without replacing the stock hardware.

Model picker (quick)

● Want the full I/O package on CB7S?

Choose CB7SBX (8+128) or CB7SAX (4+64). Both include HDMI In/Out + HD Video In.

● Want remote live view?

CB7P (CB7PQ / CB7PO) adds Remote Live View via SSHub.

Setup & good practices

● Mounting:
AC-HD12F: near the mirror for a clean view.
WR2A: at the plate (rear or front).
Power: Use the provided Y-cable if the factory USB port provides weak power.
● Legal & Safety: Keep eyes on the road. AI Vision is advisory, not ADAS.
● Firmware: Enable OTA updates to get the latest DVR, AI Vision, and compatibility improvements.
