Chapter 34 Troubleshooting
This chapter provides guidance for diagnosing and resolving common issues that may occur during the installation or daily use of the A6 series Android head unit. By following the recommended solutions carefully, most issues can be resolved directly.
Important Notes:
- If you have checked the points described in this chapter and the problem still persists, turn off the vehicle for about ten seconds and then restart it.
- If the issue remains unresolved after applying the suggested solutions, please contact ATOTO Customer Service for further assistance.
1. General issues
- What parts are required before installing the head unit?
Solution:
Most vehicles require additional third-party items that are not included with the ATOTO head unit. These typically include:
- A vehicle-specific dash kit (trim or bezel to adapt a double-DIN radio, or a single-DIN radio with pocket).
- A wiring harness adapter that mates the vehicle’s factory loom to the ATOTO stereo harness.
- In many modern cars, a CAN/data or SWC interface to retain ignition logic, RAP (retained accessory power), factory chimes, and steering-wheel controls.
Because requirements vary, you should consult your installer or retailer to confirm the exact kit for your vehicle’s year and trim level. Without the correct accessories, proper installation may not be possible.
- Will my dashboard accept this head unit (single-DIN vs. double-DIN)?
Solution:
Compatibility depends on the size of your dash opening:
For double-DIN openings, models such as A6G2A7/ A6G2B7series can fit with the proper dash kit.
For floating 10.1" displays (FlexView Pro), such as A6G110PF, the unit uses a long single-DIN chassis with a floating screen. In a double-DIN dash, you will need to decide at installation whether to fill the second bay with the supplied pocket or with an ATOTO amplifier/power pack. This choice is permanent once mounted.
2. Power & Wiring
- How do I wire power so the unit doesn’t lose settings or stay on after shutdown?
Solution:
Correct power wiring is critical. Three lines matter:
- BATT/Constant (yellow): must provide ~12 V at all times. This line maintains memory, clock, and allows BGSleep to function.
- ACC/Switched (red): should measure ~0 V when OFF and ~12 V when ACC/ON. This is the “turn on now” signal.
- GND (black): should be connected to a clean, bare-metal chassis ground (no paint, short run).
If the BATT line is not truly constant, the radio may lose settings. If the ACC is tied incorrectly, the unit may never sleep and can drain the vehicle battery. Always measure voltages with a multimeter—do not rely on wire colors, which may vary.
- My A6 car stereo lights up but won’t fully boot. What should I check?
Solution:
You need to check the following:
- ACC line: Confirm it goes to ~12 V with the key in ACC/ON, and returns to 0 V when OFF.
- Ground quality: Ensure the ground is connected to scraped, bare metal. Re-crimp or relocate if needed.
- BATT supply: Verify a constant 12 V under load. Replace any blown fuse or correct mis-pinned harness adapters.
- Cranking behavior: If the unit reboots while you start the engine, it indicates voltage sag. Improve BATT and ground routing with heavier gauge wire.
- Why doesn’t the A6 head unit turn off after key-off?
Solution:
There are two possible causes:
- RAP behavior (normal): Many vehicles keep accessories powered for several minutes after key-off, or until a door is opened. This is not a fault.
- ACC never drops (fault): If ACC voltage stays high, the wrong ignition source may be tapped, the CAN/SWC interface may be misconfigured, or wiring is incorrect. At the radio plug, ACC should measure ~0 V after key-off plus door open. If it does not, correct the source wiring or adjust the CAN interface profile.
- My vehicle uses CAN/LIN. Do I need an interface?
Solution:
Yes. Digital SWC/ignition/data cars need a CAN/data (or SWC) interface to translate vehicle signals for the head unit installation.
- Use the exact year/trim profile in the interface.
- For steering-wheel buttons: the box should output analog KEY/3.5 mm the A6 can learn.
- Don’t wire the interface and raw KEY wires in parallel.
3. Sleep & Battery
- Will BGSleep drain my battery? Can I change its settings?
Solution:
No. BGSleep is controlled by the MCU and is fully automatic. It is not user-adjustable, and it has been calibrated to be safe for long-term use. It allows the unit to wake to desktop in <2 seconds.
If you shift into reverse immediately, it prioritizes the rear camera. It enters ultra-low-power sleep (~<5 mA draw). After a fixed number of days in sleep, the MCU shuts the unit down completely.
Total draw is engineered to stay under ~3% of the battery’s capacity during extended parking, so there is no risk of significant drain. This function is fully automated; no user configuration is required.
- How can I check for a real parasitic battery draw?
Solution:
- Remove the key, turn off all lights, and close all doors/hood/trunk. Wait 10–45 minutes for the car to enter sleep mode.
- Place a multimeter in series with the negative battery terminal, starting on a high current range.
- A sleeping vehicle should normally draw <50 mA. If you see >100 mA, begin pulling fuses or disconnecting add-on devices until the draw drops. The last item removed is usually the cause.
If BATT, ACC, and ground wiring are correct, the A6 Android head unit is rarely the cause of parasitic draw.
4. Stability & Connectivity
- The A6 headunit reboots when I start the engine. Is this normal?
Solution:
No, this is not normal. It indicates a voltage sag. To resolve:
- Improve the constant 12 V supply path—use a shorter and heavier gauge wire.
- Upgrade the ground connection to a clean, bare-metal point.
- Verify that your vehicle’s battery and charging system are healthy and provide stable voltage during cranking.
- After these corrections, the unit should remain powered through engine starts.
- How can I keep Android apps online while using wireless CarPlay/Android Auto?
Solution:
- During wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, the head unit’s Wi-Fi module is occupied and cannot also connect to a mobile hotspot. To keep the Android side online at the same time:
- USB tethering is recommended. It is the most stable option and also provides gentle charging for your phone.
- Bluetooth tethering can be used as a backup option if USB tethering is unavailable.
- This is a standard limitation of all Android-based head units. Following this method ensures Android apps remain online while using CarPlay or Android Auto.
