The A7 EdgeFit 12.5 inch Android Double DIN Car Stereo — An Excellent Upgrade

For this review, I will only mention Android Auto since I have an Android phone. I can't comment on Apple features. The ATOTO S8G2114PM has served me well in my 2012 Ford F250 for the past 5 years, but I felt it was time for an upgrade. On doing some shopping, I saw the new ATOTO A7G225PKL had recently come available and I was really intrigued. Just based on specs, it looked like a significant upgrade in every way.Let me state my main concerns right up front. Will the 12.5 inch A7 cover more of the dashboard controls than the 10.1 inch S8 and will wireless Android Auto work correctly? I’ve used Android Auto daily for 5 years, on the S8. Unfortunately, I was never able to get wireless to work. I would have to connect via USB cable every time and then manually connect with an app.As is seen in the pictures, the A7 does not impact access of the controls any more than the minimal coverage by the older S8.After several days of use, I can say on the A7, wireless Android Auto connects quickly to my Samsung S20 Ultra and I have not experienced any dropouts. After the initial pairing, my phone reconnects automatically within seconds of starting my truck. No more having to manually connect through an app after connecting my phone with a USB cable. The S8 would only work for me in wired mode and would occasionally drop out randomly. Since wireless Android Auto relies on both bluetooth and wifi, on the A7, the connection happens cleanly and consistently. I haven’t experienced random disconnects or drop outs during navigation. Wired Android Auto is still there, but I have had no need for it.Performance:The A7 runs on Android 13 (with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage). This is a little disappointing since Android 16 is now on the market. However, in general use, apps open quickly, though sometimes require a second tap on the screen to open. Perhaps this will improve with software updates. Switching between apps and panning and zooming is quick and without lag. On the S8 (Android 10 era hardware), Android Auto worked OK, but transitions felt slightly slower and less fluid. Also, apps opened a bit slower. Hopefully, there will be an OS update. The built-in GPS works well. I installed the antenna on the underside of my dash, under the windshield. Since this is plastic, there is no interference.I have not yet used Google Assistant or the AI features yet as I'm am not overly fond of AI stuff. There are some interesting features and I may look at that more in the future.Voice and Call Quality:Call quality is clear on both ends, with no noticeable echo or static. I am using the included noise-cancelling microphone.Audio Quality:Audio quality is good. The built-in DSP audio tuning and sound processor make initial setup easy, but I prefer to set up my own EQ curve with the 32 band graphic equalizer. One very annoying thing is the placement of the volume controls in the status bar at the top of the screen. They are small and difficult to tap to adjust volume. If the status bar is hidden, you must swipe down from the top of the screen and then tap the volume buttons. This is certainly not ideal.Screen:The screen is bright and clear. There are daytime and nighttime modes that can be either set for all the time or be allowed to change based on sunlight. The ambient light bars on the sides are a nice touch. I like the blue and found the multicolor cycling to be very annoying. But that's personal preference and can be shut off if preferred. The screen is a bit of a fingerprint magnet. Glossy and frosted screen protectors are included.Installation:If you are installing yourself, soldering skills are a necessity. Since I was replacing one ATOTO unit with another, I was able to repurpose the old wiring harness and the dash mounting cage. On my truck, the screen sits 1/2 to 3/4 inch out from the dash. Since I can't see this from the front, I didn't bother with any additional mounting frame or hardware. While the instructions could have been a little clearer on some of the wiring options, the installation process went relatively smoothly. The wiring harnesses and other connectors (radio, bluetooth and wifi antennas, USB cables for connecting storage or other devices, etc.) are extensive and space gets cramped in the dash. Some creative cable running may be required. There are many other detailed options that I have not yet fully explored. Reading the manual is important. There is a lot going on here.Bottom LineIf Android Auto is your primary user mode, the ATOTO A7G225PKL is a vast improvement over the older S8 generation. Overall, this is a very good car stereo system.

AWESOME 12.5" Screen - VERY NICE UPGRADE from doub

This is my second ATOTO - I upgraded from an ATOTO double-din A6PF. This made installation a BREEZE. Everything plugged right in, even the external amplifier! It looks great in my Jeep Liberty - it's like having a big screen home theater. And THAT's where this one shines. The picture is GREAT and with its large size, you can have 2 apps running at the same time (like maps and a radio) and still have ample screen area for both. They also included some screen protectors that also help with any glare. The operating system in Google, so you can load anything you want. The audio without the amp is fantastic - better than my OEM. With the amplifier, WOW. Also, wireless Carplay for Android Auto are available if wanted. I paired my phone and it works fantastic.I did knock it down a star for it's bluetooth connectivity. It can be glitchy, but I'm sure a software update will take care of that. ATOTO does update its stereos as I've recently received an update for my 2 year old unit, so I'm positive this will be patched. I'll update the review and give it the 5th star when they update the BT.If you're looking for large, besutiful screen android head unit, this is a great choice

Best radio I've installed in many years.

This android radio stood out to me because of the gigantic screen. Looking into it further it had a lot of great features too and since ive had other Atoto radios I trusted it enough to add it to my cart. The install was something that concerned me initially. I have a kia optima so the radio is somewhat inset in the dash. Surprisingly, the way the bracket works it sticks out enough to make clearance of the odd shape of my dash. (Photo included of the screen in the bracket.) The install was super smooth since I had an Atoto before this radio, and was glad to see the plugs for the harnesses on the back were all compatible. It was pretty much plug and play if you've got another atoto already. The only hang up with the install was due to the screen being so large I had to go to menards to get a much longer Phillips screwdriver (the one i bought has got to be at least 10 or 12 inches). After initially powering on and setting up the radio it starts up very quickly and is extremely responsive. I have not experienced any lag opening up apps or using the controls. The ease of setting up the steering wheel controls with my cars oem buttons is less than a minute and also is instantly responsive. Not only is the screen large but its actually a quality screen. The frame around it is solid and doesnt have flex, while still being thin enough for your car. The brightness is easy to see in the daytime and it has a good depth of color (nothing looks washed or faded). The resolution is 1900x1200 so even if youre watching YouTube or another video it doesnt look pixelated. The sound is so nice, even the volume. When I bought this radio I also bought a 4 channel speaker amp with the intention of using the RCAs on the radio to amp the speakers. Out of the box the volume difference vs my old S7 atoto was noticeable. I am on the fence of using the amp but its not needed so far after testing for 2 weeks. The lights on the two sides are controlled by a tiny button on the back of the radio, one for each light and very easy to reach. You can set a static color, it has a couple rgb cycles as well. They can be disabled by holding down the button for 2 to 3 seconds if you prefer to not have additional lights.Overall I think its a great radio and the quality inside might be overlooked by some not familiar with the brand. No it isnt bose, but for car audio id say its probably better than any big names. It gives you the freedom of the android system where other brands will lock out certain features. The bigger name brands also dont focus on this market as much as atoto does. I would recommend this radio if you want an android radio with enough features and hardware to last years (you wont need to replace this in 2 or 3 years).

Great unit for a great price. I highly recommend.

I wanted an upgraded unit with a larger screen for my pickup. I found this on sale and decided to give it a try, and I'm happy I did. It has a very large screen. Seems like much larger than 12.5 inches. The radio works great, has all the features I wanted. Three different video inputs: backup camera, interior, and dash cam. Supports Apple CarPlay, which I use, and Android Auto. The screen is bright and easy to read when driving down the road. It comes with a GPS antenna, a 5g antenna, and a stereo mic for use with the phone. I'm still trying to figure out the best place to mount the mic and antennas. My pickup was never designed for anything like this, but I made it work. The face is far enough out of the mount to clear everything on the dash, which is great. The Bluetooth on this unit is much better than the old single-DIN I had installed. It will see some of the Bluetooth devices inside the travel trailer I pull with this pickup. I can actually check the solar system while traveling. It worked perfectly with the TPMS system I had added to the old unit. It supports a wireless backup camera natively, so I think I will be updating to a second backup camera to make it easier to connect to my trailer. The unit even came with a screen protector installed and an extra screen protector. It even has a SIM card with 10 days of service. I have not installed the SIM card or tried it out yet. Still trying to get everything mounted and make sure it stays in place in my old pickup.
