Loving it in my 3rd gen 2008 Toyota RAV4

The ATOTO S8 MS is a really nice head unit that I would absolutely recommend for anyone looking for a way to modernize their car and/or add a lot more capabilities that OEM head units or major brands would not offer. Among the Android head unit makers, ATOTO stands tall and their customer service is excellent. I would highly recommend any of their head units. On to specifics:I previously had an ATOTO F7 XE (Linux based) installed in my 3rd gen 2008 Toyota RAV4 and loved it ... everything just worked and I thought having physical buttons was a must have. I was super happy with the very basic experience and it really is all you really *need* if you\'re just looking to play the radio and use Apple Carplay or Android Auto (wired or wireless). When I was given the opportunity to try this ATOTO S8 MS unit, I was pretty excited because I am part of the ATOTO Facebook community and folks are always raving about how amazing S8 series is. While I knew that it was going to be a different and probably improved experience, I didn\'t realize just how much. The S8 is essentially a tablet customized to be integrated into the double din spac and with capacitive buttons (which are responsive, which I was concerned about coming from my F7 XE which had physical buttons). I stuck my nano SIM into an adapter with a a 4G data plan and found it a lot easier to use compared to tethering via WiFi since it was connected to the internet upon bootup without any fiddling with the phones hotspot, etc. (Note: one minor quibbles was that I was unable to connect Bluetooth 2 to tether wifi). The screen is better quality and clearer than the F7 XE, which I thought was already pretty stellar. Android 12 OS feels snappier compared to Linux, when comparing the responsiveness (e.g. running wireless Android Auto on my Pixel 6A). Netflix, YoutubeTV, Hulu, and Prime all work well. It\'s possible to connect it with an OBDII connector and run the Torque app to get a lot more detailed readings from your car. If certain apps are unavailable you may have to sideload the apps (or install alternative app stores like Aurora). Because of the real estate dedicated to the screen and buttons, there\'s no front facing USB or SD card (everything is in the back: the GPS antenna, wifi antenna, USB hookups, 4G sim card). I was able to run the USB cables from the back and into OEM looking ports I placed into cutouts that were in my RAV4 center console.I bought the same type of Toyota wiring harness that I used to install the F7 XE and it worked well, just requiring some crimping of wires. Because I had already installed an F7, the hookup process was almost identical. I also already had a Scosche dash kit which was already modified (the ATOTOs don\'t fit super perfect so be prepared to Dremel a little to make it fit).ATOTO really hits it out of the park with this head unit (like all of their head units). I am brand loyal and will recommend to all. Thanks ATOTO!!

Broke after a year but they replace it

Mine had issues since I first got it. It would sometimes boot into a yellow screen/dead android robot/black screen with illuminated buttons but most often it would be fine. Since it mostly was fine and the install is such a pita I kept it and it works pretty decent. Loading the USB library from USB thumb drive takes a long time but that's a limitation of the USB drive maybe? Gps works good, android auto works well when it can load correctly (needs Bluetooth and wifi turned on).Eventually after a year it died however CS is going to replace it with a refurbished unit for leaving a review.
